Experience:

Irene is a door member of the group.  She is currently serving as General Counsel of the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI).  Irene has litigated many human rights cases, specifically socio-economic and refugee rights, in recent years.  She appears regularly at all levels of the court system.

She holds an LLB (cum laude) and an LLM from the University of Pretoria.  She also holds a Masters from Leiden University with a focus on International Human Rights (cum laude).  She has clerked for Mr Pius Langa, Chief Justice of South Africa and Mr Willie Mutunga, Chief Justice of Kenya.  She has also worked for Human Rights in Practice in an international pro-bono organisation that litigates in regional and international courts, with a focus on slavery and extraordinary rendition.  She has been involved in litigation in the European Court of Human Rights and the African Court for Human and Peoples’ Rights.

Commissions:

* Part of the legal team that represented the Judges of the Constitutional Court in a complaint they laid against the Judge President of the Cape High Court for judicial impropriety before the Judicial Service Commission.

*   Represented one of the Unions in the Marikana Commission of Inquiry tasked with investigating the death of 44 workers who were shot by the police after being involved in a protest action over wages on 16 August 2011
